I Saw the Sign: The Wedding at Cana

Welcome to our new series! I am excited to explore the miracles of Jesus together as a church. There are so many layers of meaning and encouragement within each amazing account.

It is one of the most encouraging stories in the life of Jesus: A relatively unimportant wedding in a small rural town becomes Jesus’ chosen place to begin his miraculous ministry of proclaiming the Kingdom of God among us. 2000 years later we still remember Jesus’ blessing of this small wedding with abundant wine - a sign of blessing, wisdom, and grace given to humble people by the God of the Universe who is surprisingly interested in the small things.

Anchor Texts:

Isaiah 62:1-5 ESVUK

Psalm 36:5-10 ESVUK

John 2:1-12 NRSVA

Questions to Ponder:

  1. Read each of the passages above. Re-read them if you have time.

  2. What connections do you see between the passages? Common themes? Key words?

  3. Is Jesus disrespectful to his mother? Think about what we talked about in the sermon and weight it against the text and your own thoughts.

  4. What is the main lesson or reason for John to record this in his Gospel for us? Or, slightly differently, why does the Holy Spirit preserve this story for us in the Bible?

  5. Why is this the right way for Jesus to “begin” his ministry? Why not a healing or a resurrection like he does later on?

The Theme for Kids:

We’ve got another great “Hey-O” bible story for the kids this week!

The Theme in Song:

There are two songs this week. The first I expect all of you would have heard if you’ve been a Christian for at least a year or two. The second, I expect some of you would have heard if you’ve been a Christian since 1968 or perhaps more likely if you were alive, but weren’t a Christian in the 1960s.
