Lessons from the Life of Jacob

This week we will be looking at the lessons we can learn from the Life of Jacob.

Jacob’s Ladder

Jacob Wrestling with the Angel

Anchor Texts:

Genesis 25:21-28

Questions to Ponder:

1. Why do you think that God’s timing is so often out of sync with ours?

2. Jacob’s name can be translated as “usurper”. Do you think that he is a usurper? Why or why not?

3. There are many examples in Scripture where God and Jesus use clearly sinful people to accomplish His purposes. Why do you think this is?

4.Jacob seemed to play favorites, both with his wives and again with his sons. Do you think he was correct to do so? Why do you think that he did so?

5. Jacob is only one example of people in Scripture whose name was changed, usually at the instigation of either the Father or the Son. Why do you think God does this? In your mind, what do you think it signifies?

6. At the time of his death, Israel could barely catch a glimpse of the promise that God made to him. He had many descendants, but they were all in Egypt, not in the land that God had promised to him. How do you feel he felt about this situation? What do you feel are the promises of God that will not be realized in your lifetime?
