1 Peter - Part 5

We’re past the halfway point in our 1 Peter series. This week we’ve ended up in some deep waters. There is a lot of controversy about passages like this one, most of it, thankfully, is unnecessary. The controvsery makes a clear understanding of the message and context to be understood, and my prayer is that this week we’ll be aided together by the Holy Spirit as we listen to Him speak to us together! Below you can see Prisca and Aquilla, a famous couple from the New Testament and a wonderful example of a couple that served God together in their business and teaching ministry.

Anchor Texts:

1 Peter 3:1-12 ESVUK - Wives and Husbands

Questions to Ponder:

  1. What were some of the cultural challenges facing women becoming Christians at the time of Peter’s letter?

  2. Look at verse 2 again - what do you think “respectful and pure conduct” means?

  3. What adornments should women aspire to “wear?” How would these adornments help convince their husbands to be Christians?

  4. How does Peter’s advice in vv. 2-4 translate to homes divided in faith today? What strategies can wives (and husbands) use to help convince their spouses to yield to Christ?

  5. What does “weaker vessel” mean in this context?

  6. Verses 8-10 are meant to be a summary for all people in the church (husbands, wives, slaves, free) - pray for these characteristics to dominate our churches everywhere.

The Theme in Song:

This song is a bit of an advertisement for a movie called “Family Camp.” Whether you want to go see that movie is totally up to you! If you love the Skit Guys you'd be very interested to know that they star in this movie! The reason I put this song in the companion this week is because it attempts to dig a bit deeper into the challenge of family sticking together even when things are difficult. There's nothing quite so difficult as a family divided in faith. But no matter what kind of difficulty a family may be going through, Peter's letter reinforces a call to not give up and to do everything, so far as it depends on you, for the unity and evangelism of your family.
